Welcome home to Sacred and Lit!

Welcome to my company, Sacred and Lit!

Sacred and Lit has been an idea I’ve been stewing on for over 5 years. The name—Sacred and Lit—was handed down to me by a matriarch in my family. The idea being that we come from a lineage of people who are divine. A lineage of people who bring ceremony to everything that we do. Our laughter. Our tears. The way we give thanks. The way we dance. The way we throw down in the kitchen. The way we know just the right combination of words to put together when we need to get you together to cuss you out or gas you up. Wherever you find Blackness in the diaspora, you will find people making diamonds out of pressure.

We are a sacred group of people, lit from within.

Sacred and Lit is a love letter to our shared past and our collective future. It is a collection of memories and a resource for how to use those past moments from our lives as a roadmap to paint our future with all the colors and textures we’ve come across along our journeys.

Memories from my childhood include evenings posted up at my mother’s knee while she watched episodes of Designing Women in syndication. While others debated back and forth on who was their favorite—feminist marvel Julia Sugarbaker, pageant queen Suzanne, quirky tomboy Mary-Jo or the lovable (but dim) Charlene—my mom and I agreed that the VIP was and always will be Bernice.

For weeks, I went around telling anyone who would listen that I wanted to be an interior decorator when I grew up. I didn't really know what an interior decorator did but I knew I wanted to be one. I knew I enjoyed looking at the different fabric swatches my mother would use when she decided to recover all of the furniture cushions and throw pillows every few months or so. We moved around a lot and we didn’t always have the stability I would have wished for my younger self. But despite all that, my mom still made a way for us to feel like we always had a home—not just a place we were renting—with the creativity and warmth she added to the house with her decorating skills. Whether it was new slipcovers on the living room chairs or a refresh to the kitchen decor, coming home from elementary school to see something new was always a delight.

Funny how the things that brought us joy in our youth are often the things we return to later in life.

So here I sit. A Black woman returning to the little things that brought me joy decades ago. The world of design and home decor.

I hope Sacred and Lit can be as much of a place of respite in your own life as it has been in mine.

Welcome home!
