Design Challenge: Minnie Riperton - Adventures in paradise (1975)
We are continuing our celebration of Women’s History Month with a brand new installment in our design challenge. This time, we’re decorating a living room space inspired by Minnie Riperton’s ICONIC 1975 album Adventures in Paradise.
Adventures in Paradise is a soulful journey through Riperton’s ethereal vocals and inventive songwriting. The album’s standout track, “Inside My Love,” became a sensual classic and a favorite among fans, showcasing the whistle-register songstress’ ability to blend sensuality with sophistication. Produced by Stewart Levine, Adventures in Paradise also features collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Jose Feliciano, further highlighting the singer’s influence in the music industry. The album solidified the late vocalist as a soul icon and remains a timeless gem in her discography.
With album art that evokes both a tropical aesthetic and a chic mid- 70s vibe, we set out to create a living space that seemed as cool as that iconic Minnie and the lion photo. First off, we wanted to find seating that was as lush as the burnt orange velvet chair Minnie sits in on the cover art. We ultimately landed on this Fitz Channeled Velvet Swivel Chair in the color “Russet” by CB2.
To compliment that statement piece we added this vintage orange velvet sofa from Home & Closet as well as a contrasting Pacific blue lounge chair by Article.
For flooring, we opted for a soft Moroccan rug evocative of a lion’s mane. You can find the version below at Etsy.
Here’s how we designed the rest of the space…
