Design Challenge: Donna Summer - On The Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II (1979)

For the final week of Women’s History Month we continue our Design Challenge with a Greatest Hits LP from the Queen of Disco! Today, we’re designing a living room inspired by the great Donna Summer and her hit 1979 double album On The Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II.

Casablanca

A musical treasure trove released in 1979, On the Radio serves as a remarkable compilation of Summer’s disco era triumphs. The album follows a unique format; including extended versions of the artists’ hit songs versus merely gathering her hits, allowing listeners to truly immerse themselves in her timeless grooves. Additionally, the album’s title track, “On The Radio,” became an instant classic, reaching the top of the charts and showcasing Summer’s incredible vocal range and emotive power. With hits like “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” and “Last Dance,” this album remains a testament to Donna Summer’s enduring influence on pop music and disco culture.

We kick things off in our design challenge with a vibrant leather sofa from Gil Roy Props in hot pink and a stunning black and red leather lounge chair by Roy de Scheemaker for Leolux that would feel right at home at Studio 54. We can practically envision Halston, Diana Ross and Liza Minelli trading industry stories while champagne flows!

Up next, a stunning Moroccan rug in plum (Also from Etsy) as well as this elevated take on cottage core curtains from Anthropologie.

Next, we found this dark marble coffee table thats geometric designs mimic the cityscape of Summer’s album art.

And we couldn’t complete the room without a modern update on a classic record player. This model from Wrensilva comes equipped with six music listening modes and record storage for up to 135 albums so you can play your favorite disco tracks into the wee hours of the night.

And finally, to mimic the twinkling stars up above we sourced this remarkable Draped Chandelier with Green Glass Shade from Currey & Company.

Here’s the finished project below…
